Cliffs of Moher Guide

The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland’s most famed attractions, and with good reason. This natural phenomenon dates back millions of years, is steeped in Irish myths and legends, and is a haven for wildlife. Dramatic rock faces rise from the rough sea as hundreds of birds fly above — a true encapsulation of the Wild Atlantic Way.

These cliffs are the most popular stop on our Day Tours from Galway, often leaving guests in awe of Ireland’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. We’ve created this Cliffs of Moher guide for all you need to know about this truly extraordinary site, a highlight of any journey to Ireland. About the Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher were formed an astonishing 320 million years ago as sediment built up before cracking under the collision of tectonic plates. Reaching up to 700 feet high, the sheer vertical face of the cliffs is a reflection of the incredible powers of nature. They span 8 kilometres along the coast, providing awe-inspiring views as far as Kerry.

Located in County Clare, the Cliffs of Moher form a UNESCO Global Geopark with the Burren. Not only are they a geological marvel, but the cliffs are an important nesting site for over 30,000 seabirds.

The Cliffs of Moher have also played a prominent role in Irish folklore. Myriad tales tell of witches, mermaids, and foals, as well as a lost city sunk in the ocean beneath the cliffs. While these tales live on as legend, there’s no denying that the Cliffs of Moher are imbued with magic.

Things to Do at the Cliffs of Moher

The best thing to do at the Cliffs of Moher is soak up the unparalleled scenery. You can walk along an 800-metre pathway that follows the edge of the cliffs and provides incredible vistas. Stop at lookout points to catch sight of the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, and the Maumturks mountain range. A particularly iconic sight is the An Branán Mor sea stack, which rises from the ocean and stands 60 metres high. This pathway is wheelchair-accessible, and buggy lifts are also available for people with mobility issues.

One of the most popular things to do at the cliffs is bird watching. The Cliffs of Moher serve as the nesting site for over 20 different species of birds, including puffins, guillemots, and razorbills. The crags are a constant flurry of action as thousands of birds fly, hunt, and breed. You can loan binoculars from customer services for the ideal watching experience.

While the cliffs are a spectacular natural attraction, they are also home to historic landmarks. O’Brien’s Tower was built in 1835 at the highest point of the cliffs, providing one of the best views across Ireland. Further down the coast, you’ll find Moher Tower at Hag’s Head. This tower was built in the Napoleonic era and served as a watchtower.

In more recent history, a visitor centre was built at the Cliffs of Moher, offering informative exhibitions. You can tour the centre and uncover details of the Cliffs of Moher’s natural and cultural heritage, and even enjoy a bird’s eye view of the cliffs as part of the 4D Ledge Experience.

Where to Eat at the Cliffs of Moher

If you want to spend ample time at the cliffs, you can dine at either of the two cafes at the visitor centre. The Puffins Nest Cafe on the ground floor offers hot drinks, refreshments, sandwiches, soups and more for food on the go. On the first floor, the Cliffs View Cafe serves a panorama of the coastline alongside delectable main courses including battered fish, beef and Guinness stew, and smoked salmon and spinach tart. For a truly special dining experience, you can enjoy a picnic on the cliffs by pre-ordering a box from the cafe!

Where to Stay at the Cliffs of Moher

While unfortunately, you can’t stay at the Cliffs of Moher, there are plentiful accommodation options nearby, ranging from campsites to hotel stays. In Doolin, Nagles Camping and Caravan Park offers breathtaking views of the Cliffs of Moher, and options to stay in a caravan, tent, or glamping pod.

For an eco-friendly stay, you can book yourself into Hotel Doolin, the first certified carbon-neutral hotel in Ireland and the home of Fitz’s Pub. You have choices between staying in the hotel, a cosy guesthouse, or self-catering houses.

Attractions Near the Cliffs of Moher

The main attraction near the Cliffs of Moher is undoubtedly the Burren, which forms a UNESCO Global Geopark together with the cliffs. This limestone landscape is truly a sight to behold, and its fascinating geology perfectly complements the Cliffs of Moher. We visit both as part of our Cliffs of Moher and Burren Tour from Galway and Dublin to Galway, Cliffs of Moher & Burren Day Tour, during which you’ll also be able to go underground at the spectacular Ailwee Caves.

Another incredible attraction near the Cliffs of Moher is the Aran Islands. These three islands below the cliffs are easily accessible by ferry from Doolin and offer profound insight into Irish history with their ancient sites.
