Inis Meain, Aran Islands

The best example of Irish traditional lifestyle

Inis Meáin is the center (or middle) Island which lies quietly between its big brother, Inis Mór, and its smaller brother Inis Óirr. Certainly the quietest of the three islands, Inis Meáin remains a hidden gem. The main industries on the island consist of fishing and sheep raising.

About Inis Meáin

Similar to its neighbours, the island holds a maze of quaint thatched roof cottages, stone walled fields and karst limestone landscapes. From nearly every corner of the island, the 4,000 year old oval shaped Dún Chonchuir (Conor’s Fort) can be seen, as it lies on the highest ground. Hike to the top of the fort for exquisite panoramic views of the neighbouring islands and the Galway Bay.

You can also visit the summer home of “The Playboy of the Western World” writer, John Millington Synge. He spent the summers of 1989 to 1902 on the island, and was thought that he was working on a series of his upcoming poems, prose and plays.

Inis Meáin is home to renowned Irish language and culture courses, where you’ll learn history, traditions, and even set dancing. As the main industries are fishing and sheep raising, many of the renowned Aran sweaters come from Inis Meáin.
